What
is Permaculture?
Permaculture is an interdisciplinary
design system providing tools and strategies that
empower individuals to live more self-reliantly and
sustainably. Integrating principles and techniques
from ecology, agriculture and architecture, Permaculture
focuses on the whole, rather than the individual disciplines,
producing a synergy that is further enhanced by working
with natural occurrences and mimicking patterns found
in nature. Applied to housing, landscaping and gardening,
the result is more output with less input.
Derived from the
words permanent and culture, the
term Permaculture was coined
by Australians David
Holmgren and Bill
Mollison in the mid 70’s. With institutions
and practitioners worldwide, the resulting system
has seen rapid growth in recent years and ranks as
one of Australia's most significant intellectual exports.
