obsessions with the manicured yard
• contact
Pruning, spraying and general manicuring... an unfathomable amount of time, energy and money is expended on the traditional American yard every year. Along the way resources are wasted, landfills taxed and the air we breathe and water we drink are further contaminated. Human and ecological health is ultimately sacrificed for the mark of perceived affluence and civility. But, we live in an age of habitual customs that does not question or give second thought to why we do the things we do, an age largely driven by clever marketing which fuels the need to "fit in". Is it pride we should feel when looking at our manicured yards... or something else?

By the winter of 07/08, Earthen Exposure will take a look at the issues related to traditional yard care and the available alternatives not only to save time and money but to protect our health and resources for generations to come. Stay tuned. In the meantime though, enjoy the following story. I'm not sure who wrote it but it has been circulating on the Internet for at least several years and is not only humorous but choke-full of truth. Kudos to the decisively witty author.
