Between finding firewood to salvage then cutting, hauling, splitting & stacking it; nurturing my forest garden; being a full-time stay-at-home parent; working part-time as a photographer/property inspector; taking care of my aging mothers yard; cultivating primitive technological skills; marketing a piece of kayak rescue gear; designing a kayak drybag for market; foraging wild edibles; dehydrating fruit; and trying to maintain some sense of sanity through kayaking and its social circles....to say things have been hectic this summer would be an understatement. On top of that, I have cold-frames to finish so this winters crop of greens can be planted and to better combat the dropping temps and rising energy prices, I hope to find time to relocate my wood stove, install some southern exposed skylights and add additional thermal mass to my home. As so often done here at the urban homestead, I was thinking this morning how nice it would be if only there were 100 hours in a day as opposed to 24. Then, as in some kind of twisted antagonistic irony, the mailman delivered a summons of jury duty for the month of Oct. Why can't people just follow the damn law!!!

On a more positive note, with so little typing/computer work this summer, my finger condition has improved. Besides personal relief, this means I'll be in a better position to implement some of the many changes and additions I have planned for EarthenExposure.com.....at least when things settle down. That should happen by Thanksgiving. Until then, updates and news could be slim pickings, I'm afraid. In the mean time, check out the 'book recommendations' and 'links' pages. There's a ton of excellent info to be found there.

No longer is there a refuge. "Pesticides, heavy metals and other airborne contaminants are raining down on national parks across the West and Alaska, turning up at sometimes dangerously high levels in lakes, plants and fish". Click here for the AP article and here for the National Park Service overview and announcement. To go straight to the NPS conclusion, click here.

To reflect the above news, the 'drinking water' page in the 'kayaking' section has been updated.

The year was 2007 but where did it go? It was here... then gone. Though it seems the adventures were far too few, they were still had and many other memories made. Besides a good number of days in my kayak, I made several new primitive weapons and sculptures; bonded with old friends and made new; grew more food; read a personal record number of books; and most satisfyingly to me these days, I watched my child blossom.

Moreover, and to the point, is the state of earthenexposure.com. Since its inception in the spring of 07, earthenexposure.com has seen a minor facelift and small changes and additions on nearly every page. However, my goal of completing the articles I started and fleshing out my product line has fallen short. Having a full plate hasn't helped but the bigger problem has come from what appears to be some type of neurological problem in my fingers....from overuse, it seems. Though improving, general computer work is uncomfortable at best. So, I will add content as I can and announce it on this page. In the mean time, check out the book recommendations and links page. Those two resources can lead you to an incredible amount of good reading! And for the aspiring expedition kayaker, if you have read the 'kayaking' section, you may want to read it again. Every page has seen revisions and additions. There's a new page too, 'gear maintenance & repair'. There's a link to it on the 'environmental responsibilities' page.

Best,
Rusty
